Would you like to improve your German?

You can learn German fixed expressions with our interactive activities. Multiword units, fixed phrases, consist of fixed word combinations that form a unit. These phrases occur frequently in everyday speech. You may already know them from your native language or from English. Many fixed expressions exist in several languages, such as to be the black sheep and das schwarze Schaf sein. However, be careful: many expressions are similar, but you can’t always translate them directly from one language into another. For example, in English it’s to brush your teeth and to do the laundry and also to buy a pig in a poke but sich die Zähne putzen, die Wäsche waschen and also die Katze im Sack kaufen in German.
